Ultraviolet purifiers utilize germicidal lamps that are designed and calculated to produce a certain dosage of ultraviolet (usually at least 16,000 microwatt seconds per square centimeter but many units actually have a much higher dosage.) The principle of design is based on a product of time and intensity - you must have a certain amount of both for a successful design.

Ultraviolet light is part of the light spectrum, which is classified into three wavelength ranges:

- UV-C, from 100 nanometers (nm) to 280 nm
- UV-B, from 280 nm to 315 nm
- UV-A, from 315 nm to 400 nm.

The germicidal effect is in the UV-C spectrum, that deactivates the DNA. Bacteria, viruses and other pathogens are destroyed and their ability to multiply and cause disease. Specifically, UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of such bonds prevent the DNA from being unzipped for replication, and the organism is unable to reproduce. In fact, when the organism tries to replicate, it dies.

Dust mites are members of the Phylum Arthropoda, Group Arachnida and Order Acarina. Mites are not spiders or insects but a group of their own closely related to ticks. They are so small they cannot be seen with the naked eye. The average dust mite is .3mm. About 3 mites could fit inside the dot at the end of this sentence. They are oval shaped, cream colored, eight legged creatures with sticky pads on the ends of their feet making it easy for them to burrow deep in carpet fibers and furniture. Only the dead mite particles can be vacuumed effectively. They survive from eating human shed skin, fingernails, hair, pollen, fungi, bacteria and animal dander. They absorb moisture from the air and their environment. They only live for about 2-4 months, but during its life the dust mite produces about 200 times its weight in waste product and can lay up to 300 eggs!

Dust mites live in the fine layer of minute dust particles that seems to appear in your home from nowhere. About 80 percent of what you see floating in a ray of sunshine entering your home is dead skin, and we can see only 10 percent of the airborne pollutants. Due to their light weight dust mites also become airborne. Routine activities such as making the bed or children jumping and playing can send them floating in the air where they are then distributed throughout the house and are inevitably inhaled as we breathe. Other floating particles include dead dust mites and their waste products.

People continuously shed skin, as many as 50 million flakes of dead skin a day, the house dust mite has an abundance of food. The mites thrive in warm, humid conditions where their populations can explode! Unfortunately for humans, the beds in which we sleep are some of the warmer and more humid places year round. Dust mites live in mattresses, pillows, carpets, fabric furniture and stuffed toys. They like to burrow into the fabric. Depending on the age of a mattress, it may contain between 100,000 and 10,000,000 (10 million) dust mites. 20%-50% of the weight of the average pillow is made up of dust mites. We are exposed to the allergenic by-products of dust mites while we sleep. While new homes and furniture are dust free, within a month both are populated with dust mites.

Research states that 44 million homes in the U.S. (that's 45% of all homes) have a very serious dust mite problem.

Dust Mite Allergy:

Dust mite allergy manifests similar symptoms to hay fever, and is now recognized to be one of the main triggers for asthma and eczema. Sufferers are not allergic to the dust mite itself, but to the microscopic droppings these creatures leave behind in the air, our beds and furnishings. Dust mite sensitive individuals have the symptoms of hay fever all year round, particularly on waking. Night time can be the worst time for dust mite symptoms.

Asthma:

Asthma is a condition that affects the airways to the lungs. Triggers, which can be allergic or environmental, make these airways swell, restricting the flow of air. Often the onset of asthma appears with a cough, especially at night, and is easy to overlook until it has developed to a full blown attack. This is why it is essential for children and their parents to recognize the triggers and the early symptoms. This will enable them to take control of the situation immediately, and prevent a major attack. This is one of the fastest growing allergies affecting at least one in 6 children and rising. This ailment cannot be ignored, as it is one of the most significant changes to our modern health and potentially life threatening without effective management.

Eczema:

Eczema, or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is a group of skin conditions that can affect all age groups. In the United Kingdom, up to one fifth of all children of school age have eczema, along with about one in twelve of the adult population. The severity of the disease can vary. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy, whilst in more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Although it can sometimes look unpleasant, eczema is not contagious.

People who have atopic eczema may be affected by allergens in the droppings of the house dust mite. Atopic eczema is the commonest form of eczema and is closely linked with asthma and hay fever. It can affect both children and adults, usually running in families. One of the most common symptoms of atopic eczema is its itchiness (or pruritis), which can be almost unbearable. Other symptoms include overall dryness of the skin, redness and inflammation. Constant scratching can also cause the skin to split, leaving it prone to infection. In infected eczema the skin may crack and weep (‘wet’ eczema).

Mold Allergy:

Exposure to mold is widespread and non-seasonal, as molds grow everywhere; both indoors, such as on window frames and rotting food, and outdoors, with mold on rotting leaves and fungi. Molds release thousands of microscopic spores into the atmosphere, these spores end up in house dust where they grow. Dust from mold-contaminated houses can cause allergy symptoms if a mold-sensitive person inhales it. Several well-known conditions, such as Farmer's lung and Sauna Taker's lung, are caused by mould allergy. Molds favors damp musty conditions, such as kitchens and bathrooms, window frames, under wallpaper, on the soil of houseplants, piles of rotting leaves, grass cuttings and compost heaps. Molds spread by producing spores that can become airborne.

Portable Anion Air Purifier

In chemistry, a molecule or atom that is electrically charged is called an ion. It is called this because it has got more electrons or lost some electrons (compared to how many it normally has). The process of getting them and losing them is called ionization.

In Greek ion is like the word "go". "Anion" and "cation" mean "up-goer" and "down-goer".

Anion (negative charged ions) are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think waterfalls, mountains, and ocean beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, Anions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress and, boost our daytime energy.

Anions are created in nature as air molecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation, and moving air and water.

Generally speaking, Anions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy. They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation.*

A test chamber allows us to dramatically demonstrate the effect that the Anion Air has on removing cigarette smoke.

Eye protection must be used when working with short-wave UV light sources. Damage to the eyes occurs from exposure to the shorter wavelengths of ultraviolet, known as UV-B (280-315nm) and UV-C (280nm and below). Damage occurs here in the form of photokeratitis (inflammation of the cornea), conjunctivitis, inflammation of the conjunctiva and retinal lesions. The first two being colloquially known as "welder's flash" and "snow blindness."
